Community Engagement

The Community Engagement data set includes information from our records system regarding the number of community engagement efforts that our officers undertake. This is not a complete list of community-related contact that an officer makes throughout the course of a day. As with other contacts, we simply do not have the capability to generate a report that counts each and every time we interact with a member of the community. Some contacts are informal, others are educational, and some are performed by non-uniformed or non-commissioned personnel. We are able to consistently track, however, those contacts that result in an official disposition. That is the information presented here.


This data set is intended to fulfill one of the fundamental elements of the Police Data Initiative. The information contained in these files, along with other data sets, may provide researchers with valuable insight that can move beyond subjective or anecdotal claims involving community contacts by the Norman Police Department. We hope that it will also help us with identifying training needs or policy modifications to help ensure the highest level of police services.

Date: This is the date that the activity was
initiated.

Time: This is the time that the activity was initiated.

CallType: This describes the type of activity. There are generally three categories: “COP Relationships” that focus mostly on public relations efforts, “COP Problem Solving” which indicates the use of an element
of the SARA problem solving model to a specific situation, and “COP Activity” where an activity does not fall neatly into either of the other categories but is not considered simply a response to a call for service or the completion of administrative tasks.

ShieldNumber: This provides the involved officer’s badge number.

Location: This describes the area where the activity is taking place.
