Norman Citizens Advisory Board

The Norman Police Department in the process of creating the Norman Citizens Advisory Board (NCAB) to further its focus of transparency and community partnerships.

Norman Police Chief Keith L. Humphrey is working in partnership with the Department of Justice, Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 122, and Norman Citizens for Racial Justice to create a diverse board that will represent the Norman community. The board will serve in an advisory capacity to the Chief of Police regarding issues relevant to police-community relations and outreach to the community.

“All involved in the creation of NCAB share a vision of the purpose and scope of the board,” said Chief Humphrey. “I believe that the creation of NCAB will provide our department with yet another tool for community engagement outside of our ongoing efforts targeted at outreach and open dialogue such as Voices of Norman, Police Data Initiative, and Coffee with a Cop.”

The overall focus of NCAB will be to review various department investigations and enhance community trust, as citizen participation and interaction with the police are fundamental to achieving comprehensive law enforcement.

“It is my intent that the department openly and honestly shares information with members of this board, and I anticipate receiving open and honest feedback,” said Chief Humphrey. “I believe members of NCAB will bring a vast level of expertise from outside of law enforcement, in order to help me make better-informed decisions taking into account outside perspectives and community impact.”

The NCAB’s composition is intended to be representative of residents from all members of the city. Ideally, members of the NCAB will be comprised of a cross-section of residents and inclusive of differences in race, color, national origin, gender, gender identity, sexual orientation, religion, and disability. All residents will have the opportunity to apply to become board members. All ethnic and cultural organizations are encouraged to submit candidates for open positions on the NCAB.

NPD is now accepting applications for the Norman Citizens Advisory Board (NCAB). Applications will be accepted until December 1. Chief Humphrey is working to have the NCAB in place by January 2019.
