Capt. Barbour

Next week, the Norman Police Department, the Amtrak Police Department, and Operation Lifesaver will participate in “Operation Clear Track”. This activity will be part of a national safety program involving more than 600 law enforcement agencies across 48 states who will participate in various educational and enforcement related projects during National Rail Safety Week being held September 22-28, 2019.

During “Operation Clear Track,” law enforcement from various agencies will be stationed at designated railroad grade crossing locations across the nation, including in Norman. Specific locations have been chosen due to their high number of vehicle and/or trespasser incidents or near misses.

Nationally, a person or vehicle is hit by a train about every three hours in the United States. The goal of Rail Safety Week is to reduce pedestrian and driver injuries and fatalities around railroad tracks through increased public awareness and enforcement activities. In addition to possible citations being issued for violations, officers will also disseminate railroad safety cards to motorists and pedestrians.
