The Norman Police Department responded to a report of a critical injury collision near 24th Avenue SW and Wilcox Drive at 6:54 a.m. today. The preliminary investigation into the collision indicates that a 2014 Ford Explorer was traveling southbound on 24th Avenue SW approaching Wilcox Drive when it struck a pedestrian that was traveling westbound across 24th Avenue SW. The pedestrian was not crossing the roadway at a crosswalk or intersection at the time of the collision. Witnesses state that the pedestrian was nearly struck by another vehicle traveling northbound on 24th Avenue SW before being struck by the Ford Explorer.

The pedestrian has been identified as 28-year-old Tony Wade Hewitt, Jr. of Norman. Hewitt was unconscious when officers arrived at the scene. He was transported by EMSSTAT to a local hospital where he later succumbed to his injuries.

The driver of the Ford Explorer was not injured in the collision, and there were no indications of impairment.

Investigators can also confirm that the nearby construction zones were not a factor in the collision.

Portions of 24th Avenue SW between Lindsey Street and Brooks Street were closed for approximately three hours while the scene was investigated. The collision remains under investigation by the NPD/OUPD Collision Investigation Reconstruction Team (CIRT).
