The Norman Police Department is currently investigating an officer-involved shooting that occurred near 1100 W. Main Street at approximately 10:45 a.m. today.

Officers were in the area assisting with an unrelated call for service when a burglary in progress was reported in the 900 block of Garver Street. The reporting party provided a description of the suspect which was given to the officers in the area. Not long after the suspect information was released, an officer spotted an individual matching the description. Upon seeing the officer, the suspect began running away from the officer towards Berry Road. The officer initiated a foot pursuit and began giving verbal commands for the suspect to stop. Initial reports indicate the suspect then pulled a weapon from his waistband of his pants. The suspect continued to run towards a vehicle which he entered and attempted to drive away in. At this time, shots were fired and the suspect was incapacitated.

Officers immediately rendered medical attention to the subject until EMSSTAT arrived on scene. The suspect was transported to OU Medical Center. His condition is unknown, but his injuries are not believed to be life threatening. No other citizens or officers were injured during this incident. The identity of both the suspect and the officer are being withheld at this time.

Officers located both a crow bar and a gun inside the vehicle.

The department has placed the officer involved in the incident on routine administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation. The investigation into this incident is ongoing. Additional information will be released as it becomes available.
