The Norman Police Department is currently investigating an officer-involved shooting that occurred after officers responded to a welfare check in the 2600 block of Van Buren Street at approximately 3:15 p.m. today.

Upon responding to the area, officers made contact with the subject of the welfare check and attempted to negotiate with him. In the process of those negotiations, the subject stopped responding to officers and pulled a firearm and pointed it at officers. Two officers fired at the individual striking him.

Officers immediately rendered medical attention to the subject until EMSSTAT arrived on scene. The subject was transported to an area hospital. His condition is unknown at this time. No other citizens or officers were injured during the incident. The identity of both the suspect and the officers are being withheld at this time.

The department has placed the two officers involved in the incident on routine administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation. The investigation into this incident is ongoing. Additional information will be released as it becomes available.
