Norman Police Investigate Serious Injury Collision near 36th Avenue SW and Riverwalk

On March 20 at approximately 9:33 p.m., the Norman Police Department responded to a report of an injury collision near the intersection of 36th Avenue SW and Riverwalk Drive. The preliminary information indicates that a 2001 Vespa scooter was traveling southbound on 36th Avenue SW in the inside lane when it was struck from behind by a 2000 Mercury Grand Marquis which was also traveling in the inside lane. Upon impact, the driver of the Vespa was thrown from the scooter. Both vehicles came to a stop just north of Riverwalk Drive where both vehicles caught fire.

The driver of the Vespa scooter has been identified as 55-year-old Jan Ross of Norman. Ross was transported from the scene by EMSStat to OU Medical Center where she remains in serious condition. She was not wearing helmet at the time of the collision.

The driver of the Mercury Grand Marquis has been identified as 17-year-old Nathan Ferrell. Ferrell was not injured in the collision.

The collision remains under investigation by the NPD/OUPD Collision Investigation Reconstruction Team (CIRT).
