As summer kicks off and families hit the road for vacations, the Norman Police Department is once again reminding motorists to Click It or Ticket. As part of the national seatbelt enforcement campaign, our officers will be stepping up enforcement May 22 through June 4, concurrent with one of the busiest travel and holiday weekends of the year.

“Our law enforcement personnel see firsthand the loss of life when people refuse to buckle up. It is such a simple thing, and it should be an automatic next step after sitting down in a vehicle,” said NPD Lt. Jeff Robertson. “As we approach Memorial Day weekend and the summer vacation season, we want to make sure people are doing the one thing that can save them in a crash: buckling up.”

According to the Oklahoma Highway Safety Office, 223 of the Oklahomans who died in traffic crashes in 2015 were not wearing their seatbelt. Of the 223 killed, 87 unrestrained occupants were fully ejected from their vehicle.

The Norman Police Department will be taking a no-excuses approach to seat belt law enforcement during this campaign, writing citations day and night while also educating motorists on the importance of buckling up.

“The bottom line is that seat belts save lives. Everyone—front seat and back, child and adult—needs to remember to buckle up, every trip, every time,” said Lt. Jeff Robertson. “If these enforcement crackdowns get people’s attention and get them to buckle up, then we’ve done our job.”
