At Norman Public Schools and the Norman Police Department, we are devastated by the news of a school shooting on Florida’s east coast. We extend our deepest condolences to everyone impacted by this horrific event.

In Norman, our school district and police department work together every day to protect our students. This partnership has provided specially trained police officers, known as School Resource Officers, to be visible in our schools. In light of yesterday’s tragedy, there has been an increased police presence at schools across the community.

Norman Public Schools also now have secure vestibules at every school, thanks to the most recent bond issue, and the district recently implemented a visitor management system to further enhance security at schools. Schools also conduct regular drills to ensure students, teachers and staff know how to best respond if the unthinkable occurs.

School counselors are available to help students who may have anxiety about the events they see on the news. Additionally, the Norman Public School District has counselors at our middle and high schools who are specifically trained to identify and work with troubled youth who may have violent thoughts.

Student safety is always a top priority. The public can help keep schools safe by reporting any suspicious or unusual activity to law enforcement. Anyone with information should call the Norman Police Department at 405.321.1444 or to remain anonymous call Crime Stoppers at 405.366.7867.
