As the unofficial start of summer, the Memorial Day holiday weekend is a busy time for Americans. Each year, the highways fill with families in vehicles headed to vacations, cookouts, and outdoor adventures. To help keep drivers and
passengers safe, Norman police are reminding motorists to Click It or Ticket. Aimed at enforcing seat belt use to help keep families safe, NPD will take part in the national seat belt campaign set to take place May 21 through June 3.

“Buckling up is such a simple task that can keep you and your family safe in the car,” said NPD Lieutenant Jeff Robertson. “But it’s more than that. Buckling up is the law. Our officers often see firsthand the consequences of not buckling up. We see the loss of life. Often, it could have been prevented with the simple click of a seat belt. We want this action to be automatic anytime you get into a vehicle as the driver or a passenger.”

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, nearly half (48%) of the passenger vehicle occupants killed in crashes in 2016 were unrestrained. At night, that number soars to 56 percent of those killed. That’s why the Norman Police Department will focus on both daytime and nighttime enforcement with high-visibility projects across Norman. NPD will take a zero tolerance approach to seat belt enforcement.

Remember to Click It or Ticket! And always BUCKLE UP LIKE A CHAMPION TODAY!

The Click It or Ticket mobilization is done in partnership with NHTSA and the Oklahoma Highway Safety Office.
